A Pizza Plus - Calgary
If you live in Calgary you know that there are some awesome spots for pizza! From Neapolitan style to deep-dish pizza, there is not only an abundance of amazing pizza spots but also tremendous diversity in the styles of pizza.
Living in Montreal right now, I feel like there is some pretty good pizza spots here but if you want something a little better and something a little different I would say Calgary definitely has the edge. I could easily make a blog post including a number of pizza spots in Calgary, and maybe I will in the future, but I wanted to dedicate this post to one of my absolute favorite spots in the city.
The restaurant I am talking about is my neighborhood pizza joint growing up, A Pizza Plus. I grew up right by this spot and while you may think it's just the nostalgia talking, to this day my friends and I always pick up pizza from here when we are hanging out and everyone loves it! Keep reading this post to find out exactly what I love about this place and what you should order when you visit!
WHY I LOVE A PIZZA PLUS
Back when I lived in Calgary I lived pretty close to this pizza place but I would usually get pizza from another place, a local chain near my house that is actually pretty good as well called Canadian Pizza Unlimited or CPU. Most other people also seemed to like CPU so it wasn’t uncommon to go there with other people as well but one day someone told me about the pizza at A Pizza Plus and I just had to try this pizza that was described to me as mind blowing… and boy did it blow my mind.
When you first walk in you notice that there isn’t really any seating, just a couple of chairs pointed at a small TV for you while you wait for your pizza to be ready. Other than that there is a counter where you order and they bring the pizza out. When I went up to order the man taking my order, which I later found out was the owner, was truly one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. If you are looking for a place that really cares about their customers and makes them happy this is the spot.
So I got my pizza and obviously its amazing (more on this later) so this became my new usual pizza spot. As I started going more regularly, I learned that the owner runs the pizza shop with his brother, and they have shared with me how passionate they are about putting a smile on peoples faces and have often given me extras on top of what I order.
Now when I go, we usually talk the entire time that I am waiting for my pizza to be prepared and their ability to build a community around conversation and kindness is truly unparalleled to any other restaurant I have ever been to.
TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PIZZA!
Okay now that I have hopefully convinced you to go just based off of how amazing the owners are let me tell you about the pizza. A Pizza Plus serves pan pizza which is pretty much when instead of just throwing the pizza on its own in a pizza oven, like a Neapolitan pizza for example, it is cooked in a pan. This can make for a different kind of pizza because it allows you to have a higher crust (if desired) so that you can load more cheese and sauce into the pizza.
This is why the famous Chicago-style pizzas and Detroit-style pizzas and prepared in a pan, it allows for the deep-dish super cheesy and saucy effect. The pizza at A Pizza Plus isn’t as deep-dish as these but instead is the absolute perfect depth to allow for just the right amount of super melted cheese and sauce without being over the top.
So… the crust is perfect, the sauce is perfect, and the cheese is perfect… what about the toppings? They have a wide range of toppings all of which taste fresh… and its very customizable so you can get exactly what you’re craving.
SO... WHAT SHOULD I ORDER?
Now that you get the general idea, I am going to tell you EXACTLY what you need to order. For most food places I will recommend a couple of things that you can order but for this place there is one specific pizza that you absolutely NEED to get. This pizza is THE spinach and feta pizza.
Reading that you may be thinking “that seems pretty simple” or “I don’t like spinach and feta that much” and I am here to tell you that any preconceptions you have you can just throw out the window because it’s just THAT GOOD.
Make sure you share with a friend though because this isn’t the kind of pizza that you eat all on your own, these slices have a lot of substance so even if you’re craving more you’ll feel so satisfied after just a couple! Other than this pizza, which is probably my favorite pizza that I have ever had across any style and which belongs in a museum, you can pretty much choose any other pizza or customize your own and its sure to be good!
The first thing I do when I get off the plane in Calgary is go to A Pizza Plus (seriously, I posted it on my TikTok last time I was there) and you should do the same if you are ever visiting! If you live in Calgary and haven’t try it, make the trip, its right off of Bow Trail so its super easy to get to and so incredibly worth it.
